Isolation of shigellae. V. Comparison of enrichment broths with stools.
Many enteric media are more efficient for the detection of salmonellae than of shigellae. Comparisons of three enrichment broths and three plating media were made during analysis of 1,405 stool specimens to choose a combination of media which would enhance detection of shigellae as well. Gram-Negative (GN), Selenite, and Silliker's Broths were streaked to E M B, Salmonella-Shigella (SS), and xy...
متن کاملA selective enrichment broth for the isolation of Clostridium difficile.
The cycloserine, cefoxitin, fructose agar medium (CCF agar) devised by George et al' and the modification of it where egg yolk is replaced by horse blood (Oxoid CCF agar), have been widely and successfully used for the isolation of Clostridium diffiwile from faecal specimens.'-4 For epidemiological and environmental work where only small numbers of organisms may be present, it is likely that a ...
متن کاملComparison of two plating media for the isolation of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from enrichment broth culture.
Sodium azide-crystal violet-agar and a modified blood-azide (MBA)-agar were used to isolate Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from swine tissues. There was no significant difference in the number of isolations. However, 78% of the isolants from modified blood-azide medium required only 24 hr of incubation, whereas all of the isolants obtained on sodium azide-crystal violet medium required 48 hr.
متن کاملInhibitory action of tetrathionate enrichment broth.
Tetrathionate enrichment broth is a complex mixture of salts including iodides and other polythionates, but only thiosulfate (0.0736 m) and tetrathionate (0.0236 m) in combination were toxic for Escherichia coli. Individually, these two salts were not lethal. The lethal action of this thiosulfate-tetrathionate mixture affected only growing cells. A possible relationship between the lethality of...
متن کاملEvaluation of buffered peptone water (BPW) containing sodium thioglycolate as enrichment broth in combination with BPW as pre- enrichment broth for isolation of Salmonella from radish sprouts
The buffered peptone water (BPW) containing 0.5% sodium thioglycolate (BPWST) as enrichment broth in combination with BPW as pre-enrichment broth for strains of Salmonella from radish sprouts was evaluated. False-positive colonies were found on CHROMagar Salmonella agar used as an isolation medium in 28 out of 30 radish sprout samples (93%) on incubation using BPW, while such colonies were foun...
